In its reissue,
Camaleonda retains the elements that made it a contemporary classic. By mutual agreement, Mario Bellini and the founder of
B&B Italia, Pierre Ambrogio Busnelli, chose to retain the 90x90 cm seat module, as well as the backrest and armrest, faithful to the original project from which the original templates for cutting the upholstery were also recovered. The generous upholstery in polyurethane also remains unchanged, forming the characteristic padding, obtained through an innovative system of cables, hooks and rings designed by Bellini in 1970, ensuring both its appearance and modularity. The modules can be detached and rearranged as needed, using a system of pulls and rings, so the sofa can adapt to its user's dynamic needs and changing tastes. Architect and designer Mario Bellini takes a special look at his creation: "Of all the objects I have designed, it is undoubtedly
Camaleonda that best represents the concept of freedom. The configurations you can achieve are infinite." The
Camaleonda sofa was produced from 1970 to 1979. However, in its nine years of existence, this modular sofa has established itself as an indisputable benchmark of Italian design. So it's no surprise that fifty years on,
B&B Italia is putting
Camaleonda back in the spotlight by relaunching its production. The reissue project will be launched in 2019. It took almost a year to bring the sofa into line with today's challenges. The materials used in this sofa are recycled and recyclable. The structure of
Camaleonda is designed in wood panels and the spherical legs, in Forest Stewardship Council certified beech. As for its removable cover, dacron, a synthetic fabric made entirely from recycled PET, protects the padding. The seat of
Camaleonda required a great deal of work from the teams at
B&B Italia's research and development centre to ensure that the various layers interacted with each other, that it generated empty spaces to create a soft spring effect. The
Camaleonda is a dynamic, lively and sincere object, which can also be modified as much as you like, while always retaining its particular and unique identity. A founding feature of
Camaleonda is its virtually infinite modularity, a geometric nature that allows each element to become a kind of gigantic pixel through which to define its own domestic environment. By hooking and unhooking the seats, backs and armrests, you have the luxury of changing your mind as often as you like, moving and redesigning your space.
Camaleonda presents a magical balance between the rigorous geometry of the square and the welcoming roundness of the upholstery, which further emphasises the elasticity and tactile ergonomics that characterise many of Mario Belline's design projects.
Camaleonda can be upholstered using the full range of
B&B Italia fabrics and leathers, allowing even more possible combinations.
