The IOI collection, designed by the GamFratesi duo for Gubi, is a celebration of Italian materiality, with the use of brass and Emperador and Carrara marble. Marble embodies a growing desire for the honesty and authenticity of organic materials. The stones are carefully selected for their colours and their vein pattern, giving each table a unique character. Based on Art Deco geometric references with the contemporary language of design, the mirror and tables in the IOI collection share a structure composed of fine metal stems connected by a brass sphere, reflecting the shape of the letters found in the name "IOI". The brass spheres are both functional, connecting the two metal stems and reinforcing the construction, and a design signature, emphasising the collections' lightness and materiality. The tapered legs and bevelled edges of the marble tabletop create a visual paradox by imparting the marble with a feeling of lightness. Available in three sizes, IOI coffee tables work as well alone as they do when combined. Like many creations by the GamFratesi duo, the IOI collection combines opposing ideas: classic and contemporary, sober and expressive, manufactured and unique. These juxtapositions, as well as the constant desire to challenge the status quo while respecting tradition, are embodied in the coffee tables and the IOI wall mirror.
The GamFratesi studio was founded in 2006 by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi. GamFratesi is part of the latest generation of furniture designers, and together they represent a new interpretation of Danish and international design. GamFratesi's designs draw their creative impetus from the fusion of tradition and renewal, as well as from an experimental approach to materials and techniques. With their respective cultures, they draw their inspiration from Danish furniture and Scandinavian craft traditions, but also from Italy's timeless conceptual and intellectual approach. Thanks to this multi-cultural partnership, GamFratesi creates furniture pieces that reflect tradition while presenting unique stories, symbols and associations, often expressed in a minimalist style. The GamFratesi duo works with some of the biggest names in design, including Gubi, with the Bat collection and the now famous Beetle chair, Hay, with the Silhouette sofa, and also Minotti, Dedon and Fontana Arte.
