Description
The La Conica coffee maker, designed between 1980 and 1983, was architect Aldo Rossi's first mass-produced design for the famous Italian brand Alessi. This iconic coffee maker was an instant success and has since become one of the design icons of the 80s. This coffeemaker is the result of the "Tea & Coffee Piazza" operation, which saw leading architects get involved in creating a tea and coffee service. With its iconic image, La Conica is a star of the Officina Alessi brand. Aldo Rossi wanted to make it a symbol of the dialectical relationship between urbanism and the domestic world, to become an architectural object in the world of the kitchen, at coffee time.
In 1921, Giovanni Alessi founded the Italian company Alessi. Since 1929, the company has focussed on producing nickel- or silver-plated copper tableware. When Carlo Alessi, Giovanni's son, was appointed design director in 1935, handcrafting methods were replaced by industrial manufacturing. In 1955, the company began collaborating with world-renowned architects and designers such as Richard Sapper, Ettore Sottsass, and later, Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders. Alessi makes design accessible by focussing on useful, humorous and visually appealing home accessories. Most of its products have become design classics that are sold and exhibited around the world.
