In 1952, the Italian sculptor Harry Bertoia experimented with bending metal rods into functional sculptural forms. Harry Bertoia is known for his metalwork, sculptures and jewellery design. The result is a collection of chairs that have become design icons, published by Knoll International. Light and airy in appearance, the Bertoia chair, edited by Knoll, is nonetheless elegant and robust. The manufacture of the Bertoia chair is initially manual: each wire is bent by hand before being welded. The result is an almost sculptural form. This functional sculpture and its metal latticework look give the Bertoia chair an "industrial chic" design side that fits perfectly into all types of interiors, in a dining room, kitchen or bedroom. Harry Bertoia said, "This chair is a study in space, shapes, metal... If you look at it, it's made mainly of air, like a sculpture.". Although Harry Bertoia designed only a single collection of furniture, he is nevertheless considered one of the most important and influential designers of the 20th century. The Knoll logo is engraved on the base of the Bertoia chair. Renowned designer Christophe Pillet voted it his favourite chair and said, "For me, the Bertoia is like a little black dress in a woman's wardrobe: universal, timeless and absolutely necessary."
