Presented at the "Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild" exhibition in 1940, the Pelican armchair by Finn Juhl immediately stood out for its unusual shape and sturdy legs. Although the success of the Pelican armchair was immediate, it would be 61 years before it went into production in 2001.
Finn Juhl's fascination with surrealism is clearly visible in the Pelican armchair. Of all his creations, it was probably the most ahead of its time. The Pelican armchair features a characteristically soft and organic seat, hand-upholstered in Denmark, and solid wood legs. The wrap-around shape of the armchair provides great comfort and almost seems to reproduce a friendly embrace when you sit in it.
Since 2001, House of Finn Juhl has held the exclusive rights to bring the sculptural creations of designer Finn Juhl back to life. The Finn Juhl collection consists of over 40 classic masterpieces, all crafted with the utmost respect for the original heritage and with strict quality standards. The goal of House of Finn Juhl is to reintroduce the iconic Finn Juhl furniture in a modern context while staying true to the designer's original drawings. Even today, the production of Finn Juhl furniture is located in the town of Ringkøbing, on the west coast of Denmark.
Upholstered furniture, such as the Pelican chair, is hand-stitched in the same tradition as originally intended.
