Description
The CH25 armchair is one of the first chairs created exclusively by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen. Like many of Hans J. Wegner's iconic designs, the CH25 armchair is clean and simple, yet with a distinctive shape. But its presentation caused a sensation because of the choice of materials for the backrest and seat. Woven paper rope, designed to replace sea rush during the Second World War, had not previously been used for furniture. However, Wegner was enthusiastic about the material's appearance, non-stretch properties and optimum durability. The CH25 armchair has remained extremely popular, still produced by Carl Hansen since 1950: a testament to Wegner's visionary approach. It takes a skilled craftsman 10 hours and around 400 metres of paper rope to make a seat and backrest by hand, using a special technique resembling weaving, which is visible on both sides of the backrest.
